You can tell this place has authentic southern food by the sweet tea alone. It has great food! The chicken was fried perfectly and had the right amount of seasoning. The Mac&cheese wasn't too cheesy and had the right amount of flavor; and the coleslaw was fresh and crunchy. There are plenty of different types of hot sauce to give your food that extra kick or added flavor if you want. I would recommend that you call in your order 20 minutes before you show up so they can have your food ready for you since everything is cooked to order.

Great Swai! I had the fried swai, which is their house fish. The breading they used was great. Also had dirty rice and greens. The sides were also good. The greens were a little too salty, but that is just my personal preference. They were still good and i ate them all! Very clean inside. Friendly staff. Will go back.

Great food - great service! Not exactly great for your waistline but yummy Southern food at its best. Love the jalapeno hush puppies!! The staff is really helpful and friendly.

I love soul food places like this, everything is fresh cooked, great service, several options, and it is DELICIOUS! There aren't many places like this in Iowa that I have seen, so when I finally found one it was an easy choice to eat here for lunch. They have several side options and fish and chicken. They offer a variety of choices how you can get them which is great for those like me who want to customize their meal depending on how hungry you are, they do give you flexible options on every item here. So I did get the 2 piece dark with mac n cheese, collard, greens, and a mini sweet potato pie with bottled water. Came out to around $10, great deal! The mac n cheese is moist and cheesy like it should be, the greens are done right with a some great flavor, and the chicken which is freshly prepared to order was crispy, juicy, and had a nice breading. Oh yeah can get it spicy as well. They do make all sauces in house, I tried the mild, beak and fin, and the hot sauce which were all excellent sauces. The sweet potato pie was soft, moist, and full of deliciousness. Homerun on all items here, I was really impressed.. Loved my visit here and would encourage others to get something here, they have a nice menu and they make it the right way. Anyone that knows soul food knows that you look for those lovely flavors in all parts of your meal, they deliver on that at Sweetiepies!

Ate street food stand. Sign said hand cut fries, but actually mass produced from a brown frozen bag. Chicken sandwich was fair, but I probably could make better. Won't eat it again.

Ordered the 3 piece chicken with dirty rice and mashed potatoes. The chicken was flavorful, moist and juicy. The chicken had that great just fried crunch. Dirty rice was more of a red beans & rice but still ok. Mashed potatoes & gravy were good. Corn bread was hard and had little taste. Everything was clean and the staff was friendly. All in all a good place for some good fried chicken.

I love this place. Great southern cooking. Amazing fish and chicken dishes. I recommend this place, small, not too hard to find, if you are going to pick up call ahead, they cook to order. My favs are the chicken and the catfish.

We stopped here on a whim passing through the town. The owners are super friendly and accommodating. The portions are fairly large (my two kids couldn't finish a shared 4 piece strip meal). If I lived here I would definitely be a regular.

I tried Sweetiepies for the first time tonight and was wowed by the food and service. What a great addition to the Cedar Rapids food scene! The chicken tenders are dipped in a tasty homemade batter and fried until crispy on the outside but tender and juicy inside. The fish is a mild whitefish that tastes a little like catfish and is breaded in corn meal. I'm not sure which one I like better, they're both so good! Be sure to try it with the fin and beak sauce, a sweet and spicy homemade sauce that made me forget about tarter sauce. The other cool thing about Sweetiepies is the location in former 30's style gas station. They've done a great job remodeling it into a clean and modern restaurant. Cedar Rapids, we need to support this unique locally owned business.

Sweetie Pie's is located just east of Cedar Rapids' spiffy new New Bo Market in a spotlessly clean, if small, former gas station. The greeting was a bit gruff but not rude by any measure. Sweetie Pie's dining room is well lit and as mentioned, very clean. The menu board is clear and offers plenty of fish and chicken choices. We ordered a full bird (8 pcs), a large side of mashed potatoes and gravy, a small order of sweet potato fries and drinks. The chicken was spectacular. Out-fricking-standing. It was hot, juicy meat with perfectly crispy lightly breaded skin. These guys are going to do very well if the quality of the chicken is any indication. The sweet potatoes, also incredible. A small serving of the sweet potatoes is easily an ample side for 2 hardy appetites. The mashed potatoes were my only disappointment. A "large" side dish of mashed was $4+ and was served in a 10-12 oz. container with 2, maybe 3 TEASPOONS of gravy. I asked for a bit more gravy and was told I'd be charged. It might be time to rethink their side dish portions and pricing. Regardless of the potato misunderstanding, the best chicken in town will definitely have me back to try their other dishes. That will only be the case a time or two more if I'm feeling ripped off on the other parts of the meal. If they get that worked out, it will get them the 5th star and a spot in the family restaurant rotation.

Sweetie Pies my friends is artisanal Southern Cooking with an iowa twist. Don't be fooled into thinking this is just a soul food Restaraunt. I wish they had a Liqour license because I would savor the gourmet chicken and fish with a fine Aged Bourbon or Single Malt from Cedar Ridge. Order ahead, take it to work or home and make sure you get extra because you will want more and people will steal from you. If you don't like outstanding and uniquely delicious home style cooking, please don't go because you will only slow down the genius of Carol, and waste my time by taking up a valuable place in line. No, Im guessing it's probably not Gluten Free or on your diet diet plan... Again, if you're scared, I understand and respect your reluctance... Run an extra mile. you'll be fine. If you want locally sourced Iowa centric outstanding home cooking, by all means stop in. Do me a favor, look at the menu here and order fast! I'm trying to get them to open one on LA's west side. One guy had his 8 Dinners frozen and shipped to SF which is crazy. He should have shipped 16.

I liked the fish and chicken and loved the sweet potato fries. The coleslaw was ok but I'm not a coleslaw fan to begin with. Good iced tea if you like it sweet. The fired okra was excellent as well.

I ordered the 3 piece fried chicken along with Mac and cheese with fries. The fried chicken was fantastic a real treat. Sides were great too. I also enjoyed the hot sauce. I'll be going back.

Dang it. I had read the reviews and convinced my husband to go out for supper (two nights in a row!). I was really up for this being a great experience and it wasn't. Decor: Neat and clean. No problem with anything. Plenty of room to sit since it was still early. Bathroom was very clean. Because it was such a nice night we decided to take our food to go and head over to the picnic area by Metro (across the street) Service: Prompt service at the window. We needed time to look over the menu and they were working on orders for the four other people waiting. Prices: Not unreasonable, but considering what we received it was not worth it. Food: Perhaps they were just rushed? It seemed like the two orders right in front of ours might have gotten messed up. Who knows, but our chicken was very over cooked. The flavor of the coating was great, but it was so hard and tough it was breaking apart as we ate. The breast wasn't terrible, but the wings and legs were very dry. It wasn't burnt, but just really overcooked. We had a variety of sides. My husband crushed me when he mentioned that the sweet potato fries had come out of a bag frozen. I guess I thought everything was made fresh. They were tasty, so whatever the brand, I hope they stick with it. He enjoyed his collards, said he hadn't had ones so good since being in Alabama. He also liked the slaw. It wasn't too heavy and sweet. I also had hush puppies. These too were very over done and dry. The flavor was alright, but the cooking wasn't. Corn bread muffin. Very dry and overbaked. Mine was actually burnt half way up from the bottom. I wasn't a fan of any of the sauces, but my husband liked the Fin and Beak sauce. He likes more of the vinegar base. The mild was very sweet. We didn't have dessert and truthfully looking at the counter display, I wouldn't. It just didn't look good. Just like with any other restaurant that I want to like, I'll give them a second shot. I love the fact that small business is taking root. I'm hoping that I got the off night. See you soon Sweetiepies.

At the beginning they were good but now the service became very slow, sides are good but less portion and the chicken horrible especially for the price they give the real sweetie a bad name. When I called back to complain they already had closedI want my money back!!!

Great chicken and fish place, and the sweet potato fries and sauce are amazing. Lucky to live nearby what is becoming an Oak Hill Jackson institution.

Service was extremely slow and all the sides were just "okay." We got combos with chicken, shrimp and fish. All of those meats were good, but fried food largely tastes like fried food. The texture of the fish was excellent though, and I would consider going back just to get more fried fish and hushpuppies. Worth a try, but perhaps don't go out of your way for it.

I'm always happy to find southern food when I travel. This place did not disappoint. The comments on yelp were spot on. I love when I see my food cooked to order. the chicken tenders are not frozen or pre-breaded. The greens were spot on. Thanks for a great meal when I'm not home in Atlanta.

So. Sweetiepies. Yeah. Tucked out of the way just east of the New Bohemian area in Cedar Rapids, it's a bit of a trick to locate if you're not from town. The building used to be a mechanic shop, so unfortunately it's not very big, and the parking is kinda rubbish because of it. The interior is clean, the employees are as friendly as they come, and the service is quick. Now that that's out of the way, on to the food... This is probably the best fried chicken I've ever had. The only place that rivals it in quality would be Magnolias up in Minneapolis. My staple is the chicken tenders, which as perfectly crispy, spiced to perfection, and unbelievably juicy. My usual sides are the sweet potato fries, which are cooked just right, seasoned amazingly, and come with a sweet cinnamon dipping sauce that is just a delight. Other side is the dirty rice. Well cooked, has a nice hint of burn to the seasoning. Last time I was there is a was a bit watery, but eh. Seeing as that was my only "issue", I'm gonna call it a definite win. The whole dinner clocked in at around $8, which puts it right in competition with the pricing at even "fast food" chicken places. So, if you're looking for food for the big game, having friends over, or just want some delicious soul food, in Cedar Rapids there's only one option. Nothing compares. Five "Chicken-loving fat kid" Stars out of Five.

It was 9 o'clock on a Cedar Rapids Saturday night and I wanted some fried chicken. However, the usual KFC was NOT going to do the trick nor the left overs at Hy-Vee. I remembered meeting the owners of Sweetiepies at the NewBo Market. Having spent a good portion of my life in New Orleans, I was no stranger to the great chicken, chicken livers, GREENS!!, mac and cheese etc. that come from areas of the city that were wiped out in Hurricane Katrina. So, off I went. I was greeted by the beautiful smile of "Sweetiepie" herself and her husband. I watched as my chicken, chicken livers, mac and cheese, and GREENS were created. Let me just cut to the chase...WHY? would you ever eat commercial chicken or mass produced chicken in local stores when you can have it prepared fresh, hot and WONDERFUL right in front of you? It is worth the drive from wherever you live in CR. No excuses...support a WONDERFUL local business that provides some of the best chicken you will eat north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Don't wait: take the family or pick it up and take it home.

I was REALLY excited to try this place after all the rave reviews. I must say - everyone is RIGHT about this place! It's not in the best part of town, but it's far from the worst. The place is small, and it was impressively busy. Our chicken was amazing. The coating was perfect, the sides were delicious, the cornbread was great. There was nothing I didn't like about our experience. We will be frequenting this place whenever we have a craving for fried chicken going forward. No more KFC for us!

Writing this as I wait for my made-to-order fried chicken to cool down. Only a couple things could make this better, frying in a big cast iron pan full of pork fat, and a real southern grandmother at the counter. Otherwise it's perfect.

Great food! The fish and chicken are amazeballs. Get the mash potatoes and use the 3 sauce . Every time I am in CR I am going here.
